The qualification work is a comprehensive in-depth study of ways to socially
prevent cyberbullying and hate speech in the digital age.
Recently, in addition to the traditional space of bullying where adults do not
monitor the situation - at school, on the school playground or on the way to it - Internet
platforms have emerged that have been quickly mastered by those who would like to
bully without approaching their victim "live". In other words, cyberbullying is a new
form of harassment that is rapidly spreading abroad and in Ukraine, allowing people to
be harassed remotely. Traditional bullying is even safer in this sense, as it involves
harassment of the victim in face-to-face interaction, while cyberbullying is
characterised by anonymity in the virtual space.
It is also important that the level of public awareness of the problem of
cyberbullying is low. Firstly, because the bulk of the sources devoted to this
phenomenon are in English, which makes it difficult for a wide range of readers to get
acquainted with various aspects of this problem. And secondly, the real scale of
cyberbullying is anyone's guess, as what we are told in the media is only the tip of the
iceberg. Accordingly, cyberbullying is a phenomenon hidden from our view that needs
to be studied, analysed and researched.
6
It is a social problem that cyberbullying is a phenomenon that is gaining
momentum. According to data, 78% of children aged 6 to 18 use the Internet every day.
Social media is growing in popularity.
In them, users create an individual profile and can publish information of varying
degrees of disclosure. At the same time, adolescents, as well as adult inexperienced
users, often have a poor understanding of the risks associated with a lack of
confidentiality, violation of personal boundaries and the possibility of misuse of
available information. The high user activity of children is combined with their low
awareness of the dangers of the Internet and ways to avoid or overcome them, which
increases the risk of children getting into dangerous situations.
The purpose of the study is to identify the key characteristics of cyberbullying
and hate speech.
The object of the study is cyberbullying and hating as social phenomena.
The subject of the study is the specifics of cyberbullying and hating as a type of
communication.
The work consists of three chapters.
In the first chapter, the applicant explores the concept of cyberbullying, its types,
and outlines its distinctive features.
The second chapter describes the characteristics of the participants of bullying
and hate, and examines the psychological aspects of perception of cyberbullying at
different ages.
The third section identifies the psychological predictors of school cyberbullying
and hate and outlines ways to prevent it.
The study of the theoretical material allowed us to consider the distinctive
characteristics of cyberbullying as a social phenomenon. But to begin with, it is worth
noting that cyberbullying has "branched off" from traditional bullying, and therefore
they have similar features. As with traditional bullying, cyberbullying implies a
systematic process, aggressive behaviour, inequality of power between the harasser and
7
the victim, and the presence of a specific goal that drives the motives. The differences
lie in the fact that power in cyberspace has some peculiarities. Firstly, according to most
experts, the stalker is anonymous, which is why there is a tendency for aggressive
behaviour among teenagers to increase. They can hide behind fake accounts, interact
with a large audience, spread rumours and slander.
