The dissertation deals with a complex description of the morphological system of an individual Ukrainian dialect based on the dialectal texts. The author gives reasons for the necessity to apply a systematic principle in grammar studies and to focus on the functional and communicative aspects in analysing their grammatical peculiarities.
An invariant matrix model is devised and employed innovationally for a consistent description of all the parts of speech of the dialect. The author distinguishes central and peripheral morphological phenomena of the dialect system on the basis of frequency of occurrence; analyses lexico-grammatical word classes and grammatical categories of the parts of speech; identifies functional lacunas as specific markers of dialect paradigms and characterizes their types. The suggested tools of the morphological level description is applicable for analysis of other Ukrainian dialects.
The investigation gives new evidence about the grammatical system of the Ukrainian steppe dialects spread in the area between the Danube and the Dniester rivers, proving that the grammatical system of the dialect spoken in the v. Shevchenkove, Kiliya district, Odessa region is determined by the historical development of the Ukrainian language rather than the influence of neighboring dialects. The paper contains dialectal texts, which can be a source of a further research focusing on dialectal peculiarities of other language levels.
