The article is devoted to the analysis of the units of the onomastic system of
southern Bessarabia which contains the information about the natural landscape of the
region. Taking into account this fact, it means that the natural conditions of a certain
area are an important criterion for identifying the system of onyms. Onomastic space
necessarily reflects the local space. The author adds the already existing information
about the composition of proper names, their structure, internal form and peculiarities of
their creation. Landscape onyms are studied from the point of view of the action of two
universal onomastic processes: transonomization and onimization of appellate
vocabulary. The idea of fixing typical extralinguistic phenomena in proper names by
various means is confirmed. Considerable attention is paid to the use of regional
horonyms and hydronyms, which serve as a basis for the formation of new onym units in
the south of Odessa region. It is believed that the appellate vocabulary of two lexicothematic
groups, with common lexical meaning water and land, plays an important role
in the formation of the onymic space of the region. The opinion is substantiated that a
significant variety of proper names reflects the natural originality of the Danube, the
uniqueness of the terrain, agro-industrial potential of the region, fauna and flora, soils,
forming a spatial picture of human interaction with nature.
