Матеріалом дослідження слугували збірки оповідань «The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes», «The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes», «The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes», «The Return of Sherlock Holmes» А.К.
The qualification work on the topic “Syntactic features of English etiquette constructions (based on the material of literary texts)” is devoted to the study of English speech etiquette at the syntactic level in the artistic speech of A. K. Doyle, taking into account linguistic and socio-cultural specifics.
The first chapter deals with the theoretical foundations of the study of speech etiquette, differentiates the content of the concepts of etiquette, speech etiquette, politeness in the humanities, and determines the importance of speech etiquette in the English-speaking environment. Fifteen groups of speech etiquette formulas was identified according to the functional and semantic principle: greetings; conversation starters; requests; invitations; greeting-wishes; gratitude; sympathy; advice; suggestions; compliments; remarks and warnings; consent and permission; refusals; expressing one's own point of view; farewells.
The second section focuses on the study of the peculiarities of the reflection of English etiquette in artistic speech. The research material was the texts of A.K. Doyle’s collections of short stories “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, “The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes”, “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes”, “The Return of Sherlock Holmes”. The syntactic formal and grammatical features of the functioning of speech etiquette are revealed. Within the framework of formal grammar, etiquette formulas are defined as syntactically diverse constructions, different from grammatical sentences, embodied in human speech in the form of nominal, verbal groups of etiquette constructions, insertion components, communicators, dialogical units, elliptical structures and phraseological units.
The third chapter of the qualification work reveals the peculiarities of the formation of linguistic and sociocultural competence in English lessons in the 10th grade of a specialized school. The result of the study is the development of a set of exercises and tasks based on the A.K. Doyle’s cycle of short stories, its implementation in the educational process and the experimental testing during the trial training which indicates an increase in the level of formation of linguistic and sociocultural competence of 10th grade students of a specialized school. The conducted study makes it possible to assert that the use of speech etiquette structures in English lessons contributes to a deeper understanding of national and cultural peculiarities, customs, social norms of communication of the British nation, the implementation of successful intercultural communication and improvement of English language proficiency.
