Based on the population censuses analysis the number of the Greek ethnic group of the
cities Akerman, Tuchkov (Izmail), Reni and Kilia, its sex-age and social structure in the first half
of the 19th century was investigated in the article. Considering the materials of the population
census in 1817, the author identified the place of the Greek community in the ethno-social
structure of the urban population after the annexation of the Bessarabian territory to the Russian
Empire. It is established that during the first half of the 19th century the number of Greeks in the
region was constantly increasing. Particular attention has been paid to the analysis of the
auditing registers of middle-class residents of Southern Bessarabian cities during the VІІІ and IX
censuses of the taxpayer, which allowed not only to characterize the dynamics of the Greek
population movement, but also to identify the main demographic factors of population growth
and the specifics of its sex-age composition.
